The Corner Brook Status of Women Council

Logo with purple female gender symbol with the figure of a woman that reads: Corner Brook Status of Women Council

Established in 1974, the Corner Brook Status of Women Council is a feminist, not-for-profit organization dedicated to creating a welcoming and non-judgmental space for women. We advocate for equality and respect for all women, believing in their inherent worth and dignity.

Through a feminist lens, we host events to raise awareness about violence, injustice, and inequality, aiming to build a stronger and more equitable community. We offer various services focused on improving women's lives, including crisis intervention, educational sessions, hygiene products, low-cost housing, and more.

Our office is open Monday to Friday from 9am - 4pm to anyone and everyone!

What We Offer

Hygiene & Menstrual Products

We provide free hygiene bags and menstrual products to the community. You can stop in at any time during our operating hours to avail of this service.

Naloxone & Training

In collaboration with NL Health Services, we are a Naloxone distribution site. All our staff are trained to demonstrate how to use the kit so you can feel more prepared in an opioid emergency.

Sexual Health Products

Free condoms, dental dams, and lubricant are available at our centre at any time during opening hours.

SWAP Kits

We are part of the Safe Works Access Program through our friends at the AIDS Committee of Newfoundland & Labrador. At our location you can access safer drug use supplies for snorting, smoking, and injecting.

Printing Services

Printing, copying, scanning, and faxing services are available at this location.

Feminist Counselling

Our centre is proud to offer free counselling from a certified Counsellor to women and non-binary individuals. Click here to contact our counsellor or here to learn more about the program.

Supportive Housing

Above our Centre is Vesta Place: an affordable, communal living space where we are able to support women who are experiencing homelessness. Our Housing Coordinator will work one-on-one with tenants to develop personal skills and help them meet goals. Click here to learn more about our housing program.

Educational Sessions

We offer a diverse range of educational sessions, both within the public school system and through private arrangements. Click here to see a list of topics we are currently offering sessions on.

Accompaniments

Through the SARA program, volunteers are trained to accompany you through various situations whether that be a SANE exam, reporting an assault to law enforcement, your employer or campus security, or attending court.

ASIST

Are you interested in learning more about how to help someone who may be at risk of suicide? This two-day Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) might be for you. Contact us for more information or training dates.

Trauma Informed Workshops

This one-day interactive workshop leads participants in a conversation about what is trauma, what it means to be trauma informed, and how to integrate trauma-informed perspective into our everyday work interactions. Training is offered twice a year.

Abortion Doula Services

Volunteers are trained to provide support to anyone needing an abortion in the western region of Newfoundland. This may include navigating health services, as well as emotional or physical support before, during, or after an abortion. Doulas do not offer counselling or medical support.

In collaboration with our friends at BayFM, we host a weekly radio show where we discuss topics ranging from the unseen homelessness issues in the region to the second shift, abortion and all points in between. Tune into 100.1 every Wednesday evening at 5:30pm.
